The butt plug guide
10 butt plugs worth your time
From your very first plug to the one you wear all night: how to choose, how to use one, and the ten we'd buy again.
Why a plug
A butt plug is built to stay put. A tapered tip goes in easily, a wider bulb gives you that full feeling, a narrow neck lets your muscles close around it, and a flared base stops it going too far.
Wear one on your own, during sex, or as a warm-up before something bigger. It presses where it counts and makes everything else feel louder.
How to choose
- Size. Look at the widest diameter, not the length. Around 1 to 1.25 in (2.5 to 3 cm) is a good first plug.
- Material. Silicone is body-safe, soft and easy to clean. Glass and steel are firm and smooth. PVC and jelly cost less but are porous, so put a condom on them.
- Base. Always a flared base or a T-bar. Anything without one doesn't go in your ass.
- Extras. Weighted for a heavy, full feeling. Vibrating for prostate play. Hollow (tunnel) plugs for a stretched feel.
How to use one
-
Get ready
Go to the bathroom first, trim your nails and relax. A warm shower helps. Keep lube and a towel within reach.
-
Lube both
Coat the plug and yourself generously. Use water-based lube with silicone plugs.
-
Go slow
Press the tip in gently and breathe out as you push. Let your body open at its own pace. If it stings, stop, add lube and try again. Once the widest part is in, your muscles close around the neck and it holds itself.
-
Take it out gently
Relax, breathe out and ease it out by the base. Wash it with warm water and soap or a toy cleaner, and let it dry.

Plug questions
How long can I wear a butt plug?
Start with 15 to 20 minutes. With a body-safe plug and plenty of lube, a lot of guys wear one for a couple of hours. Take it out if anything hurts or goes numb, and add lube when it starts to drag.
Does it hurt?
It shouldn't. Pressure and a feeling of fullness are normal. Sharp pain means slow down, add lube or go smaller.
Do I need to douche first?
Not necessarily. Going to the bathroom beforehand is usually enough for a plug. If you like to douche, keep it gentle with plain lukewarm water.
Can I sleep with a plug in?
We don't recommend it. You won't notice discomfort while you're asleep, so take it out before bed.
Which lube goes with which plug?
Water-based for silicone plugs. Water-based or silicone lube for glass and steel. Read why Vaseline isn't one of them.
